Drip, Drip, Drip

April 11, 2008 |

A few days ago my husband came home from work and we were standing in the kitchen talking. It was a beautiful day outside, the front door was open and the kids were having a grand time riding their bikes and scooters. As we were talking, I started hearing a strange sound. A dripping sound… I dismissed it as rain. Then I remembered that it was a beautiful sunny day. I said to my husband, “what is that dripping sound?” I turned and saw water dripping from our ceiling fan. As I ran to get a bowl, my husband yelled, “the toilet!” or something of that nature and took off running upstairs. After I got the bowl under the fan, I noticed water running down our kitchen wall, then out of the light fixture, then we noticed the ceiling was starting to bulge a bit. We called maintenance and they decided that it wasn’t an emergency!!! Honestly, I would like to know what is an emergency if water coming out of your ceiling isn’t one. Since we were on our own on this one, my husband went and found a screw driver and poked holes in our ceiling. Of course this caused the water to pour out of the ceiling from the holes, but at least the bulges were gone! Here are some pictures of my leaky ceiling…

These pictures don’t really do the situation justice, white ceilings just don’t show up well in pictures I guess.

I am sure you are all thinking what a great team we are, getting this handled so quickly and efficiently. That is only because this is not the first time this has happened to us! Three years ago our upstairs toilet overflowed in another house and leaked into my kitchen cabinets. Fortunately this time it was in a different house on the other side of the kitchen, so nothing was damaged, other than the ceiling. Maintenance finally showed up the next day and peeled off the paint and did something else. I thought they should have done something more, I mean it was toilet water running out of my ceiling… but it is not my house so I don’t have much say in the matter anyway. Well, if nothing else my kitchen floors were cleaned!

I’m not sure what counts as an emergency if toilet water dripping from your ceiling doesn’t. Glad you got it fixed.

What a show and tell “nightmare.” I just think of the fall-out from this. Sure, you fix the leak, but what about the Mopping Up operation? LOL

    I like your blog’s title!

Oh no! A year and a couple months ago at our old house, I posted very similar photos. It is very unsettling to wake up to a mess like this. I hope you have a good repair man!

I’ve been there, done that before - when we first moved to our house, the first year or two we were always having our toilet overflowing directly upstairs over the kitchen. Not just one bucket was needed ,like your pic, but several, all over the countertops. It was awful!
